Windows Vista – The Latest

I’ve been hearing and reading about issues with Windows Vista. I haven’t really experienced Windows Vista myself yet, but, here is what has come across my desk:

Some who are used to previous versions of Windows, are finding it a challenge at times trying to do things in ways that they were used to on the previous systems. Some programs are not working with Windows Vista, one that I heard about was Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0. Most likely in my opinion is that companies haven’t had time to create compatible versions of software for Windows Vista. I’ve also heard of other issues regarding some drivers not having upgraded versions for Vista.

This just in…..I just read about a firm halting any upgrades to Windows Vista with their clients. They are having trouble finding PCs or laptops with Windows XP Pro on them.

My wife as suggested that I get Windows Vista for the purpose of learning it, and my response was that I’d rather get a new system with it on rather than installing it on my Dell. What if I don’t like it after the install. Removing operating systems can be a pain. With all I am hearing, I am afraid to get it. Based on what I am hearing, and if it is possible, I think it is a good idea to get a hard drive that is partitioned and have Windows Vista on one and a favorite version on the other. Don’t know if you can do that just by getting it from a store. I am interested in getting Windows Vista, but on my terms.

As I hear or read more, I will share it with you.

I have added a tab at the top for Windows Vista. If anyone has had any experiences with Windows Vista, please share them by clicking on the tab and leaving your comments for others to view. — Thanks

I have installed several times Vista (including beta versions and the official one, on computers with XP or otherwise. The only precondition is that one of both must be in a primary partition and the other on a logical one. Two primaries is also possible but it gives problems in accessing the right OS.
Deleting XP gives no problems, just delete the partition. Deleting Vista is very easy using EasyBCD or another similar program that is easy to get. Once the typical Vista boot mechanism is removed, the Vista partition can easily be deleted.
In Vista help groups around Microsoft I have seen other method which is also effective, but I don’t remember any more haw to do it.

Thanks B.Warshavsky, I thought this could be done, I wasn’t too clear on what all was involved. Thanks for sharing the information!

I have been reading about others who have Windows Vista and having trouble with the new
system. I have a Dell computer with Windows XP. I recently added another hard drive
and installed Windows Vista Home Premium on the new drive. I then upgraded to Windows
Ultimate. I did not have any trouble installing or upgrading. And no problem activating
Windows. Although there isn’t many programs yet for Vista, I think everone who wants
the new OS should get it and be patient because matters will get better. However I don’t
believe I would upgrade my XP to vista. For those of you that want to run vista, I would
buy a new computer or add another hard drive and install vista on that drive.

Thanks David, I was thinking the same thing as you even though I never really used Vista. I appreciate your comment! Tim

You can always run a livecd linux on your Vista computer. Probably you would have to connect to your cable modem or router with a cable, as the wireless card may not work.
A livecd linux can easily run in your memory, rather than off the cdrom drive. Just place the CD in the drive, and at the boot prompt, enter “toram”, and the operating system will be copied to RAM, and run from there. Then you can remove the CD from the CDROM drive. Keep the system up as long as you want. Normally, you would need a “swap partition”, but with the new PC’s running a GB or two of RAM, that is not necessary.
