Home Internet Security

September 14, 2009

Internet security is important for everyone regardless of business, personal use, etc. Looking at the home front, we as parents can’t always be at our kids shoulders watching every key being pressed while they are online. This is where K9 Web Protection comes in. I use this on our home network to monitor all internet usage. You can restrict time as well as what websites they visit. Up until recently, we were foster parents and having K9 Web Protection really helped us manage our internet access. Don’t ever assume that all is well. If you are not always there with your kids, then you can’t guarantee to yourself that all is as it should be. Don’t fall into the “Not My Johnny” trap or the “Not my Jenny” trap. So instead of being the fool that was fooled, take matters into your hand and put K9 on the scene and have piece of mind. You should also have Anti virus software installed on your PC as well as anti-spyware software. You can find this on Download.com.

Screen Saver Frenzy at the office

July 27, 2009

Ok, after being in data processing for over 18 years, I am fully aware and very much appreciate the NEED for security. With that said, I find one thing a little bit extreme when it comes to this topic. It’s when it’s decided that a PC’s screen saver is set to less than a time of 20 to 30 minutes until it goes active. It only proves one point here. Those behind this kind of decision do not have to deal with it on a daily basis. This especially applies to PC’s in a computer room where Computer Operators have a need to access the PC throughout the shift. Let’s be real here, 30 minutes is very much sufficient unless, the area of concern is frequented by “outsiders” more often than not. That would be a consideration for this type of action. But, computer rooms (data centers) don’t normally have this kind of traffic.

Google Chrome FAST Facts

July 27, 2009

I just installed Google Chrome today and it’s probably one of the most fastest installs I’ve ever done. Not to mention that it is fast in loading pages. While it’s early, I have not encountered anything that I find as a problem. However, if I do, I’ll post it. I like Chrome’s tab feature. I like FAST and I can’t stand it when you are sitting there waiting especially when a browser crashes when closing which I find Firefox is guilty of now and then. Try Google Chrome today – Check it out and see for yourself: http://www.google.com/chrome

After a tough time of debating and searching, the answer hits you! The first theme is what works best. For all you who have been faithful to my blog, this theme will seem familiar. I did change the header image to one that I feel may fit. I am hoping this is it.

Recomended Antivirus and multi-care utillity

March 23, 2009

After going from one anti-virus system to another, I have found a FREE one that I really like and so far don’t have a reason to change. Now I only use this system on the Desktop PC’s and not my laptop. That could change later. Alvira Antivirus is my system of choice. You can find this on Download.com. As far as the multi-care utility, I found a program called
Advanced System Care (Free Version). This too can be found on Download.com. I want to express the fact that you don’t need to purchase a registry cleaner since you can get this one for FREE. Yes, there are paid upgrades if you want them. But, they are not necessary.
I’m saving $30.00 a year by using a BETTER system instead of purchasing a license to use one. For anyone needing to find a utility for just about anything, I recommend visiting Download.com

Documentation is only as good as the documentor

February 4, 2009

I’ve started working again in the computer field for another organization and I continue to see the importance of quality documentation. Haste definitely makes waste in this subject. When you are documenting something for others to be able to refer to later, you really need to be careful as to it’s quality and clarity.

Sometimes when you are paging through documentation, you can notice that some of the screen shots don’t make sense or that the ones used were from years past and should have been updated. It’s well worth the time and effort to take your time when creating documentation. Not doing so can have darts flying your way if you are not careful (figuratively speaking).

The documentor needs to think of those who will read the work later when needed. The closer to perfection the work, the more appreciated the documentation will be by those in need.

Granted the person doing the work may be really good in the given profession, but, if the work is done carelessly or haste fully, then what’s the point? It was a waist of time.

It pays to be diligent. Besides, what if the creator becomes the reader or worse, the one doing the presentation in front of a large group of people?
